Decadent Drinks has been looking for an Aberlour to add to their Whisky Sponge series for quite some time, so it was fortuitous that they finally got their hands on not one, but two tasty old hogsheads of this classic Speysider. The 1989 was richer and spicier, while the 1991 was softer and more floral and fruity. The obvious opportunity was to combine these two casks and create a singular small batch bottling that is greater than the sum of its parts, showcasing mature Aberlour in a beautiful light. They are really happy with the resulting 33-year-old, cask strength bottling. This is everything they look for in mature Aberlour and another satisfying addition to their occasional but ever-expanding series of multi-vintage, small batch bottlings.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Layers of soft, honeyed waxes, pollens, beeswax, furniture oils, background green fruits, and baked apples. Add to that some lanolin, white pepper, and fruit salad juices. A really expressive and hugely enjoyable style.
Palate: Great, textural arrival, with a lot of flower nectar, beeswax, and flower honey impressions. Also olive oil, juniper, cedar wood, and dried exotic fruits. Superb maturity and still wonderfully lively and vibrant.
Finish: Long, elegantly fruity, with heather honeys, sweet dark ales, dried herbs, and aged fruit liqueurs.
