Westie Sponge Five is the final entry in this cherished series, showcasing a 1998 25-year-old single refill hogshead of Ben Nevis, bottled at natural cask strength. This whisky matured its entire life at the distillery, adding a distinct touch of ‘Westieness’ to the character of the dram.
While the team at Decadent Drinks has thoroughly enjoyed this series and could have easily continued it, they decided to conclude it at Five to maintain visual symmetry with the other releases, especially following the unique Springbank 1999 bottling in a different glass for Edition Three. The team truly values symmetry, and this felt like the perfect way to wrap up the series.
Less is often more, and Westie Sponge Five is a fitting final act. Angus was determined to feature a Ben Nevis, and it feels like an ideal way to conclude with this iconic West Highland distillery. The whisky is a beautifully pure expression of Ben Nevis—mineral, waxy, with lovely citrus and white fruit notes. It’s an old-style, Highland, distillate-driven malt whisky, offering a remarkable snapshot of the distillery’s character.
