Antonio Benedetto Carpano founded the Carpano vermouth brand in Turin, Italy, in 1786, pioneering modern vermouth by blending base white wines with an array of botanicals and sweetening it with spirits. Today, Carpano’s flagship expression, Antica Formula, is often lauded as the Italian vermouth par excellence, marrying a Piedmontese muscatel and southern Italian wines base with carefully selected mountain herbs, culminating in an unmistakable vanilla bouquet balanced by spices and dried fruit notes.  

Antica Formula is the vermouth that is the most faithful to Antonio Benedetto Carpano's original recipe of 1786. It pours a clear, dark reddish-brown amber, hinting at its layered complexity.
On the nose, intense dried fruits—prunes, dates and raisins—meld with candied cherries, a signature vanilla warmth, dried tobacco leaf, sweet baking spices and lively orange zest. The palate is a harmonious bitter-sweet tapestry, weaving stewed fig and black cherry compote sweetness with a bitter orange peel backbone, all warmed by spiced gingerbread nuance. A lingering finish sees cinnamon spice bloom over a fruitcake-like richness, leaving a smooth, vanilla-tobacco echo that beckons another sip.
