The Isle of Skye’s second ever single malt distillery, Torabhaig, has quickly established itself as a rising star of modern Scotch. Built in 2017 in a restored 19th‑century farm steading on the Sleat Peninsula, the distillery has been charting its journey toward a permanent 10‑year‑old release through its acclaimed Legacy Series. The latest chapter, Sound of Sleat, takes its name from the narrow sea channel that runs beside the distillery, a nod to both place and provenance.

This release is crafted from spirit distilled between 2017 and 2018, matured for five to six years in a mix of first‑fill bourbon barrels, virgin American oak, and refill casks. Bottled at 46% ABV, it showcases Torabhaig’s signature “well‑tempered peat” style—smoky yet balanced, coastal yet elegant.

On the nose, the whisky opens with flamed orange peel, grilled stone fruits, and toffee apple, underpinned by smoked seaweed, driftwood, and a wisp of bonfire smoke. The palate is moderately oily, delivering zesty citrus, honeyed toast, vanilla fudge, and delicate woody spice, all wrapped in a savoury cloak of salinity, sandalwood, and cigar box notes. The smoke is present but never overwhelming, more like the memory of a seaside bonfire than a peat blast. The finish lingers with salted caramel, sweet peat, and gentle oak spice, leaving a lasting impression of Skye’s maritime character.

Sound of Sleat is both a celebration of Torabhaig’s youth and a promise of what’s to come—a whisky that captures the soul of Skye’s southern shores while pointing toward the distillery’s future 10‑year‑old milestone.
