The Independent Shiraz Mataro is Teusner’s cheeky answer to Barossa tradition—because as Kym Teusner likes to say, “Shiraz is good, but add Mataro and it gets even better.”
This 50/50 blend delivers the best of both worlds: plump, ripe dark fruits from Shiraz and the meaty, savoury edge of Mataro. Together they create a wine that’s rich, expressive, and unmistakably Barossan, yet balanced with earthy spice and structure. Aged in seasoned French oak for around 12 months, it’s approachable now but has the bones to cellar for 5-10 years.
Think blackberry, plum, mocha, and pepper, with a savoury finish that keeps you coming back for another glass. Awarded “Best Value Red Wine in Australia” in Nick Stock’s Good Wine Guide, this is a crowd-pleaser that proves independent thinking makes for unforgettable drinking.

Teusner Wines is a boutique Barossa Valley producer founded in 2001 by winemaker Kym Teusner and Michael Page, built on a philosophy of preserving old vines and crafting wines that reflect Barossa’s heritage with a fresh, modern touch.
The story began when Teusner overheard growers planning to pull out 85-year-old Grenache vines. He stepped in, saved them, and launched a winery that now champions Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro (Mourvèdre) in expressive, approachable blends. Known for minimal intervention, close grower relationships, and a playful irreverence, Teusner has become a 5-star Halliday-rated winery producing wines of character, generosity, and authenticity.
